Department Campfield, the newly opened technology and creative mega campus in the heart of St. John’s, Manchester returned to its original purpose last month as a bustling market hall with the launch of the Weekender. On Saturday 28th June, Campfield was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Manchester’s flourishing makers market hosted by GRUB. The response was incredible, proving that this iconic building was ready to reclaim its role at the heart of the city’s community.
A Market Hall reborn
Under the magnificent skylights of Campfield, visitors discovered over thirty hand-picked independent traders showcasing the very best of Manchester’s creative spirit. Bakers, brewers, jewellers, florists, beekeepers, distillers, crafters, chefs and more all brought their passion and expertise to this historic venue. The revival represents something special – a perfect blend of honouring Campfield’s rich heritage while embracing its exciting future as an AI, tech and creative campus.
The vision behind The Weekender
The Weekender is brought to you by GRUB, who have long championed community-led experiences and independent makers across Manchester. Jason Bailey, co-founder of GRUB says: “We have always believed in creating spaces where people can come together to enjoy great food, and local talent. We’re excited to be able to champion independent makers, grass-roots, culture, and community-led experiences to this iconic building.”
Next Weekender: Saturday 26th July
The revival continues with the next Weekender scheduled for Saturday 26th July, 10am-4pm, followed by another on Saturday 30th August. Each event promises the same unique blend of artisanal discovery, exceptional food, and the chance to experience this remarkable building as it was meant to be experienced.
