To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March, we’ll be shining a spotlight on some of our own members making a difference in the creative, digital and tech industries. First up… Ciara Belt of Author Design, a freelance web, graphic and print designer based at Department Leeds Dock.
What or who inspired you to get into digital design?
Well, I’ve always been super creative ever since I was kid. I really enjoyed crafting and working on little DIY projects growing up and if I’m honest, had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up.
As I got older and when I got my first computer (let’s not mention the countless hours chatting on MSN, playing Solitaire and making ~stunning~ artwork in Paint), I became interested in technology and I found myself drawn to digital design. So I thought to myself, what job could I have that was both creative and in technology? Digital design! Whether it’s designing a website that’s easy to navigate or creating a logo that accurately represents a brand, I enjoy the challenge of problem-solving and the satisfaction of seeing my designs come to life. I have been fortunate enough to turn my passion into a career.
What is your ultimate career goal?
Coming from a self employed family with my parents owning a business together, it only felt natural to set up my own. After two years of freelancing, I recently established a limited company called Author Design. So it would be absolutely amazing to build a team of talented designers and create a studio that offers a wide range of design services that helps businesses meet their product design goals!
What is your proudest achievement to date?
Honestly, taking the leap and quitting my full time job in May 2021 and setting up a business. It was a massive thing for me and now that I’m two years down the line I am so proud that I took the plunge and started my own business journey!
